Changing IP adress

The past two or three times I've turned my 6500 and DXlab on I've had to change the IP address so DXlab Commander will see the radio. What do I have set incorrectly? I would have assumed the IP address would not change. Is it the sequence of starting the programs perhaps? I am sure it is operator error but still looking for enlightenment.

Have you reserved ipaddresses for all devices you have connecting?

Increase the DHCP lease time in your router to a longer value.

This is how DHCP does lease renewal.

When the radio gets an IP address, it come with a lease time, lets say it is 4 days for this example.  After 1/2 of the lease period, the DHCP server will send a renewal request.  If the radio is powered on, it accepts and the lease time gets reset.  If the radio is not on, nothing happens.  If the radio is powered up during the remaining least time, then it gets renewed and the IP address does not change.

If the the lease expires, then the IP address allocated to the radio goes back into the pool of available IP addresses and a different device can get allocated that IP address.

In a very large network with lots of devices, short lease times, on the order of several days may be in order.  With a small home network, you can set the lease time to a much longer time (mine is set for 2 weeks).

If you can't adjust the lease time because that parameter is not available for adjustment, you may be able to configure a DHCP reservation, there you tell the DHCP server to always allocate the same IP address to a host with a specific MAC address.  This will accomplish the same thing as a long lease time.

Your router typically gives out the IP address via DHCP. There is a setting for lease time for DHCP that may be too short maybe hours instead of days. Also, when the router is rebooted it forgets what leases it has given out and reassigns a new address to the Flex since the radio is also shut off and cannot prompt the router to renew the old address lease. The best thing to do is to reserve a static IP address in DHCP on your router. This is done via the MAC address of the radio which does not change. Carmine W1EQX
