'Archived' threads - Community question

Is it true that when threads are "archived", they disappear from activity and aren't searchable? That appears to be the case.

I know forum moderators need to close threads from time to time (e.g. arguments, abuse, meandering topics, etc.). Usually, closed topics are at least searchable though... they _sometimes_ contain interesting/useful info, even if there was good reason to bring the discourse to an end.

Only when the thread is no longer applicable and the info may cause confusion, such as a fixed bug, the topic may be be archived.

That will sometimes be quite subjective Tim. ;-)

Anyway, that's fine, I was just curious when I searched for a comment I had made and found it undiscoverable. Apparently these threads are still externally referenceable, as I got to it from an email update in my inbox, but I was surprised when it seemed to have completely vanished as far as the Get Satisfaction web UI was concerned.

I suppose there's a difference between a general discussion forum and a support forum in terms of goals.
