I noticed that the specification for AM is 30W, but when I set the modulation to AM the scale still goes from 0 to 100, So when I move the slider to 30, am I transmitting at 30W or at 30% of 30W?

The AM carrier with no modulation will be somewhere around 35% of the selected power. You should be able to see the full selected power output with modulation.

So should I have the Power control at 100 or set it for something lower? Does the 6500 automatically reduce "carrier drive" to match without human intervention? I got a report of some "downward modulation" from a station on 40 meters yesterday until I reduced the power setting to about 68. No guarantee that this was scientifically accurate, The audio reports, by the way, were outstanding. I haven't run AM for a couple of decades, almost, but I thought it would be fun to test it out!

The SmartSDR software in the radio handles AM mode properly and will keep the carrier in proportion to the selected RF Power setting. No need to adjust for AM.
