A cost effective Web Relay control

I wanted to share a 4 port cost effective Web Relay Switch.  This is a subset of the one I use on my remote base (I use 16 relays).  While there are many other way, I like this software as it allows me to start to build out the RemoteQTH server as you build up your station.

This is a picture of my test setup.  When done, all you need is the power cord, the network cable and any devices you wish to turn on or off to be wired in.



Regarding the Remote RCA connector:

This RCA connector is provided for remote power-on functionality. When the RemotePower ON feature is enabled, shorting this input to ground will activate the radio - openingthis connector will disable power on the radio. Refer to the SmartSDR documentation forinformation on how to configure this input. (Note: 3.3VDC Max Input.)

The parts required are:

The quick cookbook is:

  1. Order the RPI if you don't have one already
  2. Order the KS0212 for $8.99 
  3. Find and RCA cable that has the RCA connector on one end to plug into the radio and bare wires on the other end to wire up to the KS0212
  4. Build the RPI server by downloading the image from RemotQTH and booting your RPI (directions are on their website on how to build and image and get up and running.  Their image is a complete Raspian install.
  5. Login into their control panel and you want to configure their relays numbered 1, 5, 17 and 24.  This will be relay 1, 2, 3 and 4 on the KS0212 that you have plugged into the RPI.
You want to wire the 2 wires from the RCA connector to the Normally Open contacts so that when you turn the Relay ON, the 2 wires are shorted and the 6000 radio will come out of standby mode.

After that, let's assume you want to add some control for AC Power devices.  I found this on Amazon which is the least expensive power switch I could find, called the IoT Relay for less than $30 each.



Once you have all that wired up, this is the One of the Web Views you can get and it works well from a Mobile Device:




There are many other ways to get this done, but this one is one of my favourites and does not require any wire wrapping, soldering on special jumpers.

I have bit simpler (?) need. I have a 6400 and a 3000 mounted in the rack below my shack. I have routed MIC, PTT, IAMBIC KEY, and SPKR lines from the shack to the rack. (There are 9 conductors currently). I would like to be able to switch all nine lines from one radio to the other with a web relay that I can access from a browser. Rather than switch each relay individually, could I just tie 9 of the control lines of the relay board together and switch 9 of the relays all at once from one GPIO line? Maybe use another GPIO to switch the RCA to turn the 6400 on/off.  I know nothing about Rpi's yet.  Is there a GUI way to do this?

In answer to your question about tying the relays together, you can do this.  You simply run jumpers from the "hot" line of the relay coils which you wish to operate simultaneously.  I have done this in order to switch both legs of the 240v power to my linear.  The control software may not reflect that all the relays which you have tied together have been opened (or closed).  If it is an entire relay bank, that is no problem.  But if you have some relays on the bank performing other duties that are not tied together with others, you just have to remember which is which.  I haven't found that to be an issue.
The Sainsmart relay cards have worked well for me.

There are numerous webcontrolled switches avaiable. They seem all to use the ESP8266 chip, one that comes to mind is Shelly, and there are other on ebay for $10-20 dollar. The all conatin a webserver and one or more relays. Connection to LAN is by WiFi. https://shelly.cloud/shelly1-open-source/ If you want a more ham-focused solution Remoterig (www.remoterig.com) do offer a webswitch with 5 relays, a built in web-server plus a possibility to control your rotator, all from a webpage. Cost a lot more but very nice. So either you do dive into the linux swamp and try get RemoteQTH to do what you need, or go cheap and simple, or maybe try the excusive stuff. Your call :)

That is the one I originally planned on buying, but for control software it seems that you either have to buy a 3rd party program, or use command line stuff. I wanted something that I could control with a GUI.

It does have a Web GUI.  And, then you are not dependant on Windows to control it.

Michael.....That would work fine, but When I was on their website, I didn't see where to get that application. There were links to other sites but they had license fees of $45 for apps. Is this screen native to the unit (ie: in it's firmware?)

There is no application.  You plug the relay into your network and then enter the network address, like http://192.168.0.68.   It is all built in.  You do this from a web browser.

I whipped up this simple browser interface for a Flex Alpha tester using an 8266 and a 4 relay board.   It allows members of the Flex Alpha team to execute remote up/downgrades and SmartLink association.  The blue areas are clickable buttons that turn red when active.  
It is a paired down version of the antenna controller I mentioned earlier in this thread.  The UI is similar.   I've found the 4 channel relay boards with an 8266 for under $5 now.
