49" 4K at six feet

I am currently running two Dell 27" monitors via DP and a 720 HDMI TV off to the side that gets mostly used to watch the news and monitor IP cameras at the house.

Like everyone else I am running out of digital monitor real estate.  So I am thinking about buying a 49" 4K TV and mounting it behind and above the monitors (see rendering below).

The question is for those that are doing this. Are windows apps usable at 3840 x 2160 resolution on a 49" TV at six foot away?

I am sure SSDR works fine but I would like to be able to move outlook up there and other things that I need to watch but don't need total focus.

73,

Rich

I have 2 43" 4K monitors on my desk, and they work just fine.  I have the resolution set at 3840-2160 and use 125% font scaling, so that I can easily read MS Outlook, my HRD Logbook, etc..

Thank you Mike. I am assuming that on your desk is closer than 6 feet?

I want to avoid the font scaling as my experience is it only works well on about half the apps I run.

I am just thinking 6 feet is pushing it for me on a 49" TV at 4k

I have had good luck (so-far) with the font scaling.
I think you are right... 6' away will be VERY difficult without scaling.
I moved my chair back to see how that would look,  and with my eyes - just too difficult.
Sometimes I wish I kept 1 of my previous 27" monitors on the desk,  ... but my 2 each 43" 4k's are getting the job done for me.  Have had this setup for about 4 weeks now.

Thanks again Mike. I am doubting the 49" over your 43" would be much of an improvement.

My 27" monitors at 2560 x1440 is just on the edge of tolerable for me.  If they were not high quality monitors and really bright they would not work.

I guess what I should do is make a trip to best buy and open a browser on a 4K -49" TV and back away from it as you did.  Sometimes I overlook the obvious methods of figuring stuff out !

I think this is a 50".  its has an adjustment so you can actually scale the size of apps and icons so the screen can be more usable

Chris, what make and model is that? Thinking of replacing a pair of 24" monitors with a single 42". Running a Nvidia GTX 1080TI video card so it can handle whatever I use

Keep in mind that you could be losing horizontal resolution going from two 24" monitors to one 4K TV. So less application space.

Rich, your op position is super pristine clean!  How do you do it?  Mine is always a mess with stuff all over the place.

Nicely done!  I need to step up my game I think!  I like the patch panel idea.  Cool!

I decided to roll the dice and ordered a Sony XBR49X800E 49-Inch 4K unit. It is one of the very few TVs I could find that has PIP.  This will allow to to have the news on in a window and the rest used as monitor.

If it does not work well for windows apps I guess it will make a nice dedicated SSDR display :)

OK done deal. Works fine for the flex and most apps but its likely I will run 125% scaling for most typical windows applications.

Makes the 27" monitors seem small.

I have been happy with mine.. I think they are a real great value and enhancement to the shack.. I usually use 125% also.  particularly if I am contesting and move some of those windows up onto the screen
