Getting Started With SDR and FlexRadio

Great discussion! I’m also interested in SDR and FlexRadio setups. Choosing the right hardware can make a big difference, especially when running radio software and other demanding applications. Generally nothing special is needed for Flex software. It's often the additional software that creates the load, logging, FT8, CW skimmer, on and on. My solution was 2 PC's. A mini-nuc for the radio and another pc for everything else.

The Flex system does the majority of the "work" in the radio which is the server. The PC (Windows, Linux) is merely the GUI that shows the state of the radio and allows the user to manipulate the controls since there are no knobs/buttons/meters on the radio. Flex supplies an included windoze version of SmartSDR and there are several independently developed Linux packages. Since everything is connected by Ethernet, each item can be located wherever desired,, including different continents remotely. The network aspect often needs the most attention and the configuration of that network affects the performance of the entire system.
